About the PTO

Dear Friends and Families of Antioch Elementary School,

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year and to the Antioch Parent Teacher Organization!

The Antioch PTO is a group of dedicated parents and teachers who strive to create an atmosphere where teachers and administrators can do their best work – and so can our children.  We share one common goal and that is to create the best school and the best educational experience for our children by assisting Antioch in its mission and endeavors. There are no membership dues and every family at Antioch is a member.

During the 2010-2011 school year, our focus was on enhancing our playgrounds and assisting, both financially and through volunteer hours, with educational enrichment and tutoring. By mid year we were able to add several large pieces to both playgrounds and by the spring we had installed swings on both playgrounds. Our expanded playgrounds now include rock walls and other climbing surfaces, new slides, balance and strength elements, as well as additional seating for our teachers and staff. We were also very excited to be able to add specially designed equipment to our stand alone EC Playground. Additionally, we put together a plan to enhance the field located adjacent to the 3-5 playground. Unfortunately, we have encountered some roadblocks to our plan and are currently working with both UCPS and Union County to overcome the objections and, finally, get a field for our kids to play on. In the meantime, we have safely set aside the money for this project and we will keep everyone updated as things progress. Our fundraising success also allowed us to support Antioch’s Tutoring and Enrichment Initiative. This initiative, along with the dedication and talents of our teachers and staff and many hours of volunteer support, has allowed Antioch to be named a High Growth Honor School of Excellence for the second year in a row. We supported and participated in various other worthwhile programs such as Terrific Kids and Girls on the Run, and helped enhance some of our “specials” areas like music and art. Of course none of this would be possible without the on-going and generous support of our Antioch families, their respective employers, as well as our local business community. If you’d like to find out how you can support Antioch, please see the “Fundraising Is Fun” sheet in the Meet and Greet folders, or visit the Antioch PTO Website (www.antiochpto.com) for further information.

One of our focuses for the 2011-2012 school year is to be able to further equip our children and our classrooms, at all grade levels, with the cutting edge hands on technology that will help them grow academically and prepare them for future study and careers. It has been said that we are grooming our children for jobs and careers that don’t yet exist and expanding the resources available to accomplish this task is instrumental in making sure that our children are prepared and able to be on the leading edge of whatever is to come!! Stay tuned throughout the year for information about our progress, how you can help us accomplish this worthwhile goal, and for opportunities to see these exciting new additions to our school in action. Additionally, we would like to continue assisting financially with tutoring, academic enrichment, support of school-sponsored initiatives, and continue to help build our extracurricular areas such as music and art.

Volunteerism will be our other focus this year. This past school year, our tireless volunteers logged over 12,000 hours in many different capacities both inside and outside of our school.  We have 2 very important new volunteer driven initiatives this year – Our parent run Copy Center and our Classroom Connections Initiative. Both of these endeavors were created as a response to the budget cuts that UCPS has had to undergo. This is our way to lend a hand during these challenging times and I hope that you will consider getting involved with these or the many other volunteer opportunities that we have to fit any schedule. Please contact Nicole D’Amico, our VP of Volunteer Coordination, if you are interested in the Copy Center or other volunteer opportunities, or Ali Milligan, our President Elect, regarding our Classroom Community Connections Program.

I Look forward to serving as your president this year and I hope that you will join in on the fun as we help Antioch continue to be the very best educational environment for our children that it can be!!

Sincerely,

Amelie Schoel
